The smelting of carbon steel The smelting of carbon steel is typically conducted in either converters or open hearth furnaces. The rapidly advancing oxygen top-blown converter technology is poised to replace the traditional open hearth furnace. Refined liquid steel is poured into ingot molds to produce various ingot forms. Once forged or rolled, these ingots are transformed into plates, strips, bars, and sections of diverse shapes. Carbon steel is generally utilized in its hot-rolled state. When crafted into tools and machinery parts, it undergoes heat treatment tailored to specific applications. Steel castings, on the other hand, predominantly receive heat treatment as part of their production process.
