The Smelting of Carbon Steel The process of smelting carbon steel typically occurs in converters and open hearth furnaces. Converters are primarily used for the smelting of ordinary carbon steel, while open hearth furnaces are employed for all kinds of high-quality steel. The technology of oxygen top blow converters is rapidly evolving and has the potential to replace traditional open hearth furnaces. Once the refined liquid steel is prepared, it is poured into ingot molds to form various ingots. These ingots are then forged or rolled into plates, strips, bars, and sections of diverse shapes. Carbon steel is commonly used in its hot rolled state. When utilized for manufacturing tools and various machine parts, carbon steel generally undergoes heat treatment in accordance with the specific requirements of use. Most steel castings are also subjected to heat treatment.
