The Smelting of Carbon Steel The smelting of carbon steel is typically performed in converters and open hearth furnaces. Converters are primarily used for smelting ordinary carbon steel, while open hearth furnaces handle various high-quality steels. The rapidly advancing technology of oxygen top-blown converters has the potential to replace traditional open hearth furnaces. Once refined, the liquid steel is poured into ingot molds to create various ingots. These ingots are then forged or rolled into plates, strips, bars, and sections of diverse shapes. Carbon steel is often utilized in its hot-rolled state. However, when utilized for manufacturing tools and various machine parts, it undergoes heat treatment based on specific requirements. For steel castings, heat treatment is generally necessary.
